The purpose of this page is to help and inform visitors who are interested in visiting the
Greek islands.
There is information on some of the many individual islands as well as a quick guide to start you off in the Greek language. The Tips & Tricks page has been introduced to pass on any odd bits of help and advice that may be of use to someone new or perhaps not so new to Greece. As many visitors may well find themselves spending
a day or two in Athens, a page for this ancient city has also been included.
CRETE is the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands. The landscape is diverse with mountains, gorges, sheer coasts, plateaus, and
large sandy beaches. Crete was in her glory 4,000 years ago as the home to the Minoan civilization and you can see remnants of this throughout the island and most noticably at the
PALACE OF KNOSSOS, just outside Heraklion. There are four prefectures of Crete,
CHANIA,
RETHYMNO,
HERAKLION and
LASSITHI. The Cretans are a very proud people and in many areas have preserved their traditional customs.
